CMS releases lookup tool to determine your MIPS participation status
Unsure of your participation status in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS)? Use a new interactive tool from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Quality Payment Program to determine if you need to participate in the MIPS track this year. To determine your status, enter your NPI (national provider identifier). Information will be provided on whether you must participate in MIPS this year and where to find resources.
Check this tool if you are a:
- Physician assistant
- Nurse practitioner
- Clinical nurse specialist
- Certified nurse practitioner
You will not participate in MIPS if you are new to Medicare this year. You may also be exempt if you are participating in an Advanced Alternative Payment Model. To learn more, review the MIPS Participation Fact Sheet.
If you need to participate, here are tools to get started
Want to simply avoid a MIPS penalty by doing the minimum? Follow the College’s step-by-step instructions. Looking to fully report so you can maximize your bonus? Follow our tips to maximize your quality score. Also, CMS has terrific free resources to help with MIPS reporting:
- Small practices (15 or fewer clinicians) can get free personalized assistance to help select and report appropriate measures and activities to satisfy requirements of each MIPS performance category.
- Larger practices (16+ clinicians) can get free assistance through Quality Innovation Networks – Quality Improvement Organizations (QIN-QIOs). QIN-QIOs provide customized technical assistance and one-on-one help.
In addition, the CMS Quality Payment Program website has a wealth of resources. The Quality Payment Program Service Center may be reached at 1-866-288-8292 (TTY 1-877-715- 6222), available Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 8:00 pm ET or via email at QPP@cms.hhs.gov.
